With Flu Season coming up, it’s important to be prepared. Whether it’s the little things like eating right, getting enough sleep or dressing up for the cold, you want your body to be as strong as possible.

Here are some FAQ’s taken from the Ontario Ministry of Health:

Who is at risk of catching the flu and how long does it last?

People of any age can get the flu, and illness usually lasts two to seven days, sometimes longer in the elderly and in people with chronic diseases. Most people who get the flu are ill for only a few days. However, some people can become very ill, possibly developing complications and requiring hospitalization.

What are the symptoms of the flu?

Symptoms of the flu include:

fever

chills

cough

runny eyes

stuffy nose

sore throat

headache

muscle aches

extreme weakness and fatigue

ear aches (children)

nausea (children)

vomiting (children)

diarrhea (children)

Symptoms may vary from person to person. For example, the elderly may not have a fever, while children can have symptoms like earaches or stomach problems.

The cough and fatigue can persist for up to several weeks, making the return to personal and work activities difficult.

If you or a family member have the flu, use this Flu Assessment Tool to help you decide what to do next.

What is the difference between the cold and the flu?

The common cold and flu symptoms are often very similar. Use the chart below to help you determine if what you have is a simple cold or the flu.

Symptom

Complications

Can lead to sinus congestion or infection, and ear aches.*

Can lead to pneumonia and

respiratory failure, and become

life-threatening. Can

worsen a chronic condition.

Prevention

Frequent hand washing

Annual immunization and

frequent hand washing

*Colds do not generally result in serious health problems such as pneumonia or bacterial infections.

NOTE: Children may also experience the croup, ear infections, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea when they have influenza – these symptoms are not common in adults.

How does the flu virus spread?

The influenza virus spreads mainly from person to person through coughing or sneezing. People can become infected by touching objects or surfaces with flu viruses on them and then touching their eyes, mouth or nose.

How long can someone with the flu infect someone else?

People with the flu may be able to infect others one day before symptoms develop and up to seven days after becoming sick.

That means that you may be able to pass on the flu to someone else before you know you are sick, as well as while you are sick. Children, especially younger children, might be contagious for longer periods.

The flu shot works by prompting your body to build its natural immunity. Here’s how:

You get the flu shot, which contains inactive (dead) flu viruses.

When your body comes into contact with the flu – even though the strains are inactive, you make antibodies that fight those viruses—even though they are inactive.

You’re now ready to fight off those flu viruses, using your own natural antibodies.

Basically the flu shot, and all vaccinations, help your body build natural immunities by triggering a natural response from your immune system.

Flu shots are available free of charge to all Ontarians over the age of six months, who live, work or study in Ontario.

With organic labels popping up everywhere from baby food aisles to skin care lines; Toronto based Bamboo Lily™ is taking over the clothing aisle too! Local designer Lillian Chiu started the company when she discovered that her Goddaughter suffered from eczema – a common skin reaction to allergens affecting more babies each year. Lillian looked to offer a line that is mostly all natural, without chemically treated fabrics that can irritate baby’s sensitive skin.

Lillian has an extensive background in design and is a graduate of Seneca’s Fashion Arts Program. Combining her natural ability to create and her growing concern for the environment, Lillian decided to whip up a chic line of Asian-inspired baby and toddler clothing using the ultimate in sustainable living: rayon from bamboo fabric.

Bamboo Lily is the ultimate in green luxury! Rayon from Bamboo fabric is a renewable resource that has a cashmere-like texture, and is so incredibly soft. Bamboo is the fastest growing plant in the world – making it a sustainable and renewable resource. Bamboo is also eco-friendly as it doesn’t need pesticides or fertilizers to grow. It wicks moisture from the skin; keeping baby’s delicate skin cool and dry. Why wouldn’t anyone choose bamboo?

‘Made in Canada’ is just better! All our fabrics and garments are made locally, right here in Toronto. While some may argue that it is cheaper to manufacture overseas, we believe in supporting our local economy. Quality over quantity! The choice is that simple.

Who could resist the fabulous designs? Hooded Bath Robes monogrammed with “Miso Cute”, and cheeky pictures silk-screened on their Onesie and T’s. Bamboo Lily™ is revolutionizing green gear for babies! The perfect gift for any new baby – fashion and function meets utter environmental chic!

Keener Style describes my sense of style in a nutshell. I’m a geeky nerd girl who has always had a keen interest in art, design, and the overall creative element. I’m a little bit o’ left brain and a little bit o’ right brain. By day, my work involves business, math and statistics, and the rest of the time I’m dabbling in random art projects, whether it’s designing and sewing handbags, drawing at the Toronto School of Art, helping friends on set with their photo shoots, coding and designing simple websites, et cetera.

One thing I must declare is that I am not a fashion guru by any means. I don’t know fancy fashion terms. I don’t know much about famous designers or brands. I am simply a keener girl who truly appreciates great fashion, timeless art and eloquent design.

People often ask where I get some of my funky finds. I shop in small boutiques, street markets, trade shows, and even the mall—yes, the mall. To me, a great design find is a great design find, no matter who designed it. The purpose of this site is to simply write about fashion, art and design that is beautifully unique, modern, funky and impressive. And if it’s local, even better!

I’m a geeky keener at heart with an artsy vision and an eye for design. Writing about the talent that’s out there is part of a creative path that I welcome you to join. I hope you enjoy the ride.

It seems almost fitting that the potential sky rocket of food prices has led us to the predicament of going back to the original roots of the Niagara Region. Boasting one of the most fertile land in the region, it makes sense for most of us to make us of our backyards and start growing those backyard gardens we have replaced with lawn, sod, and concrete. We have become reliant on so many outside food sources that we have no idea come from; the benefits of home-grown food become evident and quite frankly, delicious.

For local grown foods and if you’re looking to grow your own food visit this local site
